South Africa - Day 10 - Final Full Day

The final full day in JoBurg was mostly museums and revisiting apartheid.  In the morning we drove out to Soweto which was where the blacks and colored from JoBurg were banished when the white National Party decided that it wasn't a good idea to co-mingle.  This was where Nelson and Winnie Mandela lived when he was arrested and sent to jail for 27 years.

Good artistic use of old cooling towers.

The government has been trying to provide reasonable housing for all citizens since apartheid was eliminated in 1994.  Unfortunately, budget limitations mean a lot of people still live in shanty towns. Our tour guide said even those these shacks look really bad, most the people who still live in these areas are immensely proud and keep the habitat spotless.

This was the house Nelson Mendela lived in when he was arrested which is now a museum.  Winnie stayed here for several years after Nelson was arrested but was constantly harassed by the police and eventually kicked out of the residence.

This was the soccer stadium in JoBurg that the refinished when SA hosted the 2010 World Cup. It holds 98,000 people.

We've been home for a couple of weeks now but the bandwidth was so bad over in SA that I didn't upload any movies.  So here's some of the short movies I shot during the vacation.
