Day 9 - Liking Lithuania

Onboard the ship we heard a lot about Lithuania that made us wish we had more time to spend there.  As it was my parents and I both had decided to take a tour of an abandoned Soviet Nuclear Missile
base.  It served as a stark reminder as to just how much the world has changed in a short period of time ... but perhaps also how much it has remained the same in ways.

Before we arrived we stopped at a beautiful lake named Platelai Lake which afforded the opportunity for beautiful vista's of the Lithuania country side.

Then we arrived at what they called the Cold War Museum.

The Most Beautiful Visitor to the Museum
The Soviets abandoned this site shortly after the "end" of the cold war and it was stripped of a lot of the materials by locals trying to get by in hard economic times.  Fortunately it was saved in time to create the existing museum.  The first pic here is the top of one of the 4 main missle silos.

The very scary part from a technical view point of this facility was how they aimed the missle.  Around the edge of the silo were degree's used for pointing the missle towards it's ultimate destination.  Fortunately, it wasn't actually used.
