We stopped a few times on the way over to catch pics of southern Norway
And then after a quick lunch (salmon and egg salad sandwich ... really good although it sounded strange) we threw the luggage into the hotel room and headed off for one of the scenic drives on the mountain pass above the city. This was Friday September 19th and the outlook for both Saturday and Sunday was overcast. The hotel clerk suggested we do the scenic drive with it's overlooks on Friday rather than risking the weather.
The first stop on the road out of town and up the mountain is a really well done lookout of the fjord and the town of Aurland. The lookout was named Stegastein.
Looking down from it we saw the town of Aurland with the hotel we were staying at. 10 minute drive and we were already way above where we started from.
Looking out the other way you see the narrow branch of the fjord leading up to the town.
Driving on up we quickly got above the tree line and into the naked beauty of the upper mountain passes.
King of the mountain ... T&T at the top of the first mountain pass.
What's all this white stuff?!?!?!?
Oh yeah ... we do remember this stuff. It's really really cold! :)
As far as these little guys, don't ask me. They're cute, furry, beige, and don't like having there pictures taken. I tried to look it up, but gave up quickly.
For all of you who thought I was speaking of Tina when I said cute, furry and beige, go to the back of the classroom. :)
Great fall colors hitting the upper altitudes of southern Norway.
On the somewhat bizarre front ... ... ... (OK ... it's art. Bizarre is acceptable) we reached a pull off called "The Den". An artist built this pull off with funding from whoever. It's a cave leading to a glass enclosed "den" of a bear on top of his hoard. I spent the rest of the day trying to figure out it's meaning.
On the way back we stopped and did a short hike back to a lake with a nice waterfall pouring into it. I got close, but at 50 degrees F, I wasn't getting myself intentionally wet. :)
One of the things I keep forgetting to mention is all the sheep they have in Norway. These ones were free ranging up on the mountain tops where we were.
This one was really REALLY disappointed when I stopped the car to take his pic and he mistakenly thought I might have food for him. Silly sheep.
So ... sorry for so many pics today. I probably threw 75% of them away, so think of how bad it could have been. :)
Until the next time ... keep sheepishly smiling ...
