To give some perspective our villa is located up above Cruz Bay. The journey to our first day hike was rather a short drive and then hiking out a mile or so to Honeymoon Beach. The second day took us farther up the north shore where we finally hiked out to Waterlemon Cay.
Today we took off to the south shore down to Saltpond Bay. If it was normal driving you could get there in 20 minutes or so. Going up and down mountains and curves it took over an hour to get out to the parking spot and then another half mile down a steep downward trail to Saltpond Bay.
The bay itself was absolutely gorgeous and provided some fantastic snorkeling. One side of the bay offered the largest number of tropical fish species we'd ever seen in one location while the other side offered a tremendous amount of varying coral species.
Besides the tropical fish we spotted another deer, some flounder and turtles near the shore line, and a sand crab trying to hide himself under some sand.
After snorkeling for a couple of hours, we took a short hike over to the actual Salt Pond. The locals come here during the very dry, hot part of the year to collect salt from this shallow pond, using it for medicinal purposes, skin treatment, and cooking.
You can see the abundance of salt that's available at the shoreline. In another few weeks the wet season will set in and do away with this collection process.
Continuing on for the trail for another half mile of so you come to Drunk Bay. (Don't ask me ... I don't make up the names.)
Some person got somewhat creative and left dead peoples bodies on the rocks.
Due to some strong currents during the snorkeling, a couple miles of hiking, and then having to hike back up the steep trail to the car, we were all absolutely exhausted and we'd only made it to 12:30.
After a late lunch in the city of Coral Bay we made the trek back to our villa. On the way there Gwen insisted that Fred almost cause a major accident on the highway so that I could take these pictures of wild goats standing up to get fresh leaves from the top of the bushes and a wild donkey on the side of the road.
So until tomorrow, keep the pirates at bay and your loved ones close ... and don't let Gwen tell Fred how to drive. :)
