New England - Day 7 - Newport: The Land of Sailboats and Mansions

Coming into Newport this morning showed a ton of sailboats, with several marina's much larger than this.  But since we'd seen so many sailboats out at Block Island I didn't really concentrate on taking pictures of them.

The part that amazed us was the number of mansions along the shore line as we approached the city.  These were just a few sample pics of what we passed on the way in.

This last one is an interesting mansion on a rock ... literally ... and rents out for a mere $12K per week.

Once we arrived we did a trolley tour which gave us a closer view of these Summer Cottages of the rich and famous.

We also passed by the Newport Golf Club where Ike Eisenhower played 150 rounds of golf a year after he retired.

Even the cows in Newport are a bit unique as evidenced from the Oreo Cookie Cow.

The main stop of the tour was a Vanderbilt house named The Breakers.  This one is far more lavish and modern than the one we've visited on a couple of occasions down in Asheville NC.

Even though we didn't get to spend enough time there, Karen, Tina and myself enjoyed ourselves nonetheless.

Until tomorrow, happy sailing.
