New England - Day 8 - Bristol Rhode Island

Friday we made the short jog across the bay to Bristol Rhode Island.

Captain Andy House making sure the ship docks safely.  Super nice guy who we became good friends with.  One of the benefits of a small ship.

In the morning we visited the Herreshoff Martime Museum which is also the home of the America's Cup Hall of Fame.  From 1850 through the end of WW II the Herreshoff Ship Building Company was one of the largest boat manufacturers around.  The company is credited with building 8 America's Cup winning yachts.

Here's the interior cabin of a 1920 sail boat.

An early Catamaran.

Lunch was an old fashioned New England  Lobster and Clam Bake. On the beach just up from our ship they had a big bonfire to heat rocks underneath the fire, and after removing the bonfire wood the rocks are covered with wet seaweed which is used to steam lobster, clams, potatoes, sausage, chicken, and corn on the cob.

The Melbourne crowd at the clam bake lunch.

In the afternoon we visited the Blithewold Mansion.  The house itself was pretty but not as impressive as the Breakers from yesterday.

What was far more impressive than the Breakers though was the gardens.  There was roughly 13 acres of gorgeous gardens with a variety of plants which I don't recall seeing before in an outdoor environment.

Although there were birds and bee's everywhere, I only got one caught in a picture.

Until tomorrow, stay crazy!
